You might have heard lately many times the term inclusive design or universal design, but the focus is wrong, it’s tough to be only in architecture. We forget or do not even know the benefit generated by inclusive design in product and graphic design.
One of the main objectives of inclusive design is to reduce the gap of lifestyle between us all, with no exceptions. Although, it seems the quality of life is only right for users without disabilities or young and healthy individuals. Inclusive design related to fashion is not any new or special feature. It is the simple focus that ensures products and services designed to meet the needs of citizens as wide as possible, regardless of their age or ability.
The aging of the population and the growing movement to integrate people with disabilities into society made the term more familiar but still much is missing at the end of the day.
These are a few of the commandments of inclusive design to follow:
Fair Use: The product is useful and can be sold to people with different abilities
The flexibility of use: The product adapts to a wide range of preferences and individual skills;
Simple and intuitive: The use of the product is easy to understand, regardless of the user’s experience, knowledge, language skills, or level of concentration;
Low Physical Stress: The design can be used efficiently and comfortably and with minimal fatigue
A golden rule is to always keep in mind that older people and people with some kind of limited abilities will always be potential users and, as such, should be considered. This awareness and change towards an inclusive society must be based on all segments of society, especially the State, which must guarantee the fundamental right of every citizen to come and go, regardless of his or her physical condition.
But, not only! We as citizens have also an important commitment, promote and nurture designers whose products are based on the inclusive design commandments, educate and integrate inclusivity with children and spread the term in any field possible. for a better quality of life for us all.
Isn’t it ideal, the way that inclusive design could make us all benefit?
